UN Council condemns Quran burning; the West votes against resolution

Jul 13, 2023

Geneva [Switzerland], July 13: The UN Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution condemning the Quran burning incident in Sweden as a provocative act that violates international human rights norms.
Amongst the 47 council members, there were 28 votes in favour of the resolution, 12 votes against, and seven abstentions on Wednesday. European countries and the United States voted against it, and say it contradicts their view on freedom of expression and human rights laws, despite also condemning the Koran burning incident. Speaking on behalf of the European Union, the Belgian ambassador stated that it is difficult to draw the line between freedom of expression and incitement to hatred, saying it requires a delicate balance that is not reflected in the text of the resolution. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk condemned hateful acts against Muslims and members of other religions during the urgent debate at Tuesday's opening.
