South Korea says North has tested suspected medium-range missile

Jan 15, 2024

Seoul [South Korea], January 15: In its first test of nuclear-capable missiles of the new year, North Korea is believed to have fired a medium-range missile, according to South Korea.
The ballistic missile was launched on Sunday in the area around the North Korean capital Pyongyang, according to the General Staff in Seoul.
It flew about 1,000 kilometres eastwards before crashing into the open sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The missile test coincided with the news that North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui is planning a visit to Russia in the next three days.
According to South Korea, further data on the missile test by the self-proclaimed nuclear power North Korea was analysed in cooperation with the United States and Japan. However, South Korea's military assumed that the test was a medium-range missile with a range of at least 5,500 kilometres, which is less than that of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
