Sexual assaults in the Canadian military have increased significantly

Dec 06, 2023

Ottawa [Canada], December 6: Statistics Canada recorded a significant increase in sexual assaults in the country's military in 2022 compared to 2018, reflecting the latest sign that sex crimes are increasing rapidly.
In 2022, about 1,960 soldiers, 3.5% of the entire Canadian military, reported being sexually assaulted while serving. This number in 2018 was 1.6%.
Women accounted for nearly 75% of complaints. The Canadian military has faced pressure in recent years over allegations that senior officers engaged in sexual misconduct.
According to Reuters, Statistics Canada's report is based on a survey of members of the armed forces. About 64% of sexual assault victims do not report the incident to superiors. The reason is that they think reporting won't change anything.
"The above results are truly deplorable... It is disappointing that sexual misconduct continues to occur in our forces," said General Wayne Eyre, Chief of the Canadian Defense Staff.
The general emphasized that what is happening shows that the Canadian military still has a lot of work to do to improve workplace conditions for soldiers.
Last year, an official inquiry recommended that military sex crimes trials be transferred to Canada's civilian courts because of what the country's military courts had handled over the past 20 years. inadequate.
