President Biden proposes term limits for US Supreme Court justices

Jul 31, 2024

Washington [US], July 31: US President Joe Biden on July 29 proposed a plan to reform the Supreme Court system, including a proposal that each judge would serve only 18-year terms instead of life as stipulated in the US Constitution.
In addition, Mr. Biden also proposed that any incumbent president would select a new judge every two years. According to a statement from the White House, term limits would help the position of US Supreme Court justices change more frequently and determine the time to nominate new judges, avoiding the case where a president's choice has a great impact on future generations.
The proposal comes after controversial Supreme Court rulings, including a nationwide repeal of abortion rights in 2022. However, observers say that with the current divisions in the US Congress , it will be difficult for Mr. Biden's judicial reform plan to be passed in the final months of his term, according to AFP.
