Mexico issues formal complaint over floating barrier in Rio Grande
Jul 16, 2023
Mexico City [Mexico], July 16: The Mexican government has expressed concern after the construction by US authorities of a floating barrier in part of the Rio Grande border river, designed to prevent illegal migration.
The placement of buoys in the middle of the river could impede the normal flow of water, a diplomatic note from the Mexican Foreign Ministry to the US government said on Friday. The river barrier also violates bilateral and international treaties, it said. The construction of a razor wire fence on an island off the US state of Texas was also criticized.
The construction of the floating barrier off the town of Eagle Pass, which could make border crossings even more dangerous for migrants, had been ordered by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
Mexico is on the migration route of people trying to reach the US, many fleeing poverty, violence and political crises in their home countries in Central and South America. (DPA)
