Macron hosts more talks as Europe confronts US shift on Ukraine

Feb 20, 2025

Paris [France], February 20: French President Emmanuel Macron was holding an informal video conference with 19 European countries and Canada on Wednesday to strengthen coordination on Ukraine, according to the Élysee Palace.
The new round of talks follows a crisis summit held on Monday in Paris which yielded no concrete results. The meeting of leading European nations backing Kiev had ended with divided opinions on a potential peacekeeping force on the ground in Ukraine. Germany is not taking part in Wednesday's round of talks.
The discussions come as Europe faces a critical question: how to respond to the United States' dramatic shift in its Ukraine policy. Washington is seeking to push Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin towards negotiations while transferring responsibility for securing a peace agreement to Europe.
