German police investigate shooting incident at watch shop in Cologne

Sep 22, 2024

Berlin [Germany], September 22: German police are investigating a shooting at a watch shop in Cologne on Saturday as possibly having a connection with a recent series of explosions in the city, a police spokesman said.
Initial findings suggest that, shortly after 4am (0200 GMT), an unidentified person fired more than 20 shots from a fully automatic weapon at the facade of the building in the Niehl district, and then fled. Shell casings were found in front of the building, the spokesman said, adding there were no injuries. The public prosecutor and the police believe it is linked to organized crime, and to two recent explosions in the city centre which caused some damage but no injuries.
On Thursday the head of the Cologne criminal investigation department, Michael Esser, said that the city's police were "facing major challenges as a result of unprecedented cases of violence and serious crime that have never been seen before." (DPA)
