EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas says the free world needs a new leader

Mar 02, 2025

Brussels [Belgium], March 2: The EU's top diplomat has reacted forcefully to US President Donald Trump's verbal attack on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by declaring: "The free world needs a new leader."
"Ukraine is Europe! We stand by Ukraine," wrote Kaja Kallas, the bloc's foreign affairs chief, on social media.
"We will step up our support to Ukraine so that they can continue to fight back the aggressor. Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It's up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge." Trump ripped into Zelensky during a heated exchange at the White House earlier on Friday.
Trump accused Zelensky of recklessly endangering global security by refusing to negotiate a peace deal with Russia, warning that he was "gambling with World War Three" and the lives of millions. He dismissed Ukraine's position in the war, arguing that Zelensky did not "have the cards" to dictate how Washington should engage with Moscow. Trump insisted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was willing to negotiate and issued an ultimatum: either Ukraine made a deal, or the US would withdraw its support, leaving Ukraine to "fight it out" on its own.
