Dam explosion is devastating consequence of Russian invasion, says UN chief

Jun 07, 2023

New York [US], June 7: United Nations Secretary General AntonioGuterres has said the explosion of the Kakhovka dam "is another devastating consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine."
Both sides have blamed each other, but experts in the West have pointed the finger squarely at Moscow.
Guterres said in a statement that the UN had "no access to independent information on the circumstances" that led to the destruction of the dam but that it was a "monumental humanitarian, economic and ecological catastrophe."
The United Nations and humanitarian partners are hurriedly sending aid, including drinking water and water purification tablets, Guterres added, saying they must be given safe passage.
"Today's tragedy is yet another example of the horrific price of war on people. The floodgates of suffering have been overflowing for more than a year. That must stop," he said.
