Bulgarian politicians again fail to form government amid political turmoil

Jul 23, 2024

Sofia [Bulgaria], July 23: Bulgarian politicians have again failed to form a government after June's parliamentary election, with the country facing another vote if a third attempt is unsuccessful.
The centrist We Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (PP-DB) alliance was unable to secure a majority in the country's unicameral National Assembly.
Former prime minister and We Continue the Change member Nikolai Denkov said no stable majority could be formed in the current parliament, which was elected in June.
The winner of the election, the centre-right GERB-SDS alliance, similarly failed to attract enough support to elect its candidate Rosen Zhelyazkov prime minister.
The two alliances had governed in an informal coalition since 2023, but called for new polls after failing to agree on a new prime minister in March. Bulgaria has seen six parliamentary elections since April 2021. (DPA)
