Biden fears there will be no peaceful transfer of power if Trump loses

Aug 08, 2024

Washington [US], August 8: US President Joe Biden said he does not believe in a peaceful transfer of power in the US if Republican candidate Donald Trump loses the presidential election on November 5.
"If Mr. Trump loses, I have no confidence at all," President Biden said in an interview with CBS News when asked if he thought there would be a peaceful transfer of power after the vote.
"He meant exactly what he said. All this means is, 'If we lose, there will be a bloodbath,'" Biden added .
During a March campaign appearance in Ohio, former President Trump warned of a "bloodbath" if he did not win the election.
At the time, Mr Trump was discussing the need to protect the US auto industry from foreign competition and he later said he was referring to the auto industry when he used the term.
Trump has made baseless claims that he won the 2020 election against Biden. The former president has been charged with crimes in Washington DC and Georgia for illegally attempting to overturn the results. On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol to disrupt the certification of Biden's victory.
In the interview, Mr. Biden accused his predecessor of trying to put allies in key election positions in states to manipulate votes if there was a dispute. "You can't be patriotic only when you win," Mr. Biden said.
President Biden dropped out of the campaign last month after fellow Democrats called for him to stop following a poor debate performance with Mr Trump that raised questions about the Democratic president's age and health.
Vice President Kamala Harris has since won the Democratic nomination and is running against Mr Trump. During a campaign stop in Wisconsin on August 7, Ms Harris used Mr Trump's words and cited his conviction to assert that a second term would be disastrous for the country, according to AFP.
"A person who suggests that we should end the American Constitution should never again stand behind the seal of the President of the United States," Harris said, referring to Trump's calls to "end" constitutional provisions surrounding his previous election defeat.
