Mogadishu [Somalia], February 21: At least 13 soldiers were killed in attacks by the Islamist al-Shabaab militia on three military bases in Somalia, the Somali military reported on Thursday.
The militants first detonated car bombs before launching a multi-directional assault with heavily armed fighters, a military spokesman said.
While attacks on two bases were repelled, the assault on a military camp near the strategically significant town of Adan Yabal resulted in casualties. More than 20 soldiers were also injured, he said.
According to a government spokesman, more than 130 Islamists were killed in the fighting. Meanwhile, al-Shabaab reported, via its radio station, that it had killed more than 100 soldiers and seized numerous weapons.
Information from both al-Shabaab and the government cannot be independently verified. (DPA)
